with the Profesor Andrea Dubler

Professor Andrea DublerOn Friday, August 10, 2007, Professor Andrea Dubler shared a Dwelling in the Word moment with the ELCA Churchwide Assembly.

I am by nature quiet, anxious, and a fearful person.

It is not easy for me to step forward and put myself out on the frontlines like this. I would much rather stay in the background and be a follower rather than a leader. But it seems that God decided years ago that he would not leave me to my own devices. Throughout my life, He has constantly called me to various ministry, service, and leadership. And at those times when my fears and anxieties would rise up and threaten to drive me back into my shell, God would lead me to Scripture. There I would find the assurance I needed to step forward in faith.

Be still and know that I am God.

There are many examples I could quote; one of my favorites is Psalm 46. Psalm 46 begins with the words "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, therefore we will not fear." Those words direct me to put my trust in God and to find strength in Him.

And then the latter part of the Psalm helps to center me in God and to find the calmness and assurance I seek. The Psalmist writes, "be still and know that I am God."

Years ago, my beloved bishop, Donald McCoid shared a meditative devotional based on those eight words. It made such an impact on me and I have used that meditation many times when I have been anxious and fearful. And I would like to share that with everyone here. And even though this will be quicker than would normally be expected, I would like you to join with me in meditating on those eight words. If you would closure eyes and join me.

Be still and know that I am God.
Be still and know that I am.
Be still and know.
Be still.
Be still.
Be.
